Did you know there is a more embodied and expressive way of engaging in therapy?

Sometimes 'words' are hard to find – which is why 'art therapy' or 'creative arts therapy' can be a useful alternative approach when engaging with traumatic material that may be difficult for clients to access and address.

Talking therapies can rely heavily on verbal and cognitive processing, whereas creative arts therapy – while also allowing for talking – is an embodied and expressive approach. It can engage both ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’ processes, inviting clients to work not only through words, but through creative process, art materials, movement, sound and sculpture. It can also move beyond the literal through metaphor and symbolism, which can be a helpful way of approaching what may otherwise feel difficult or intolerable.

Is it for adults?

Absolutely. Whilst many adults may feel disconnected from their creative selves, often believing they can't draw or that they are not artistic –art therapy is actually not about artistic skill at all. You will find the process of exploring and expressing yourself with the art materials, through sound or movement, is just as important as the meaning behind your final image – which itself doesn't need to perfect in any way.

It may also be useful to know that the art therapist does not assign meaning or interpret what you create – meaning is explored and defined by you.

It is also important to note that Art of Therapy are not art classes. Whilst I, Aneta Wnek have extensive experience as an arts facilitator, I am also a master's-qualified, registered (AThR) creative arts therapist with experience working in clinical settings.

Still have questions?

You probably have many other questions about creative arts therapy – some of which may be about whether this approach is right for you and your concerns – and whether, in fact, we are a good fit – this is important, as the therapeutic relationship is vital.

This is why I offer the free 20-minute obligation-free 'discovery chat' as the initial way for us to engage – and there is no such thing as silly questions!

From there, the first face-to-face session is the intake, where I get to understand where you are at and your therapeutic goals before we start engaging in therapy sessions.

Please note I offer 1:1 in-person sessions, group therapy as well as telehealth. I am also able to work with referrals and self-managed NDIS clients.

BOOK your free 20-min DISCOVERY CALL here or feel free to send me a message and we can go from there.

I look forward to chatting with you.
